Acquisition of One Clinics provides additional boost to healthcare ambitions

When Grupo Ageas Portugal acquired One Clinics in mid-2024 it was another step forward in the ambition to position itself as an open Health Ecosystem, and Médis, its healthcare brand, as the “personal health companion of the Portuguese”. The aim is to develop a robust healthcare ecosystem that provides a complementary and affordable option for medical care that promotes better access, quicker treatment and a credible alternative to a national health service under strain. People find it difficult to gain access to certain medical specialities, hospitals are overstretched and waiting times are long.

In recent years, Médis has extended its range to include a lighter version of its products and services to increase the access consumers have to private healthcare services. This has included Médis Light, a lighter and more affordable private insurance option and Médis Dental, providing access to oral hygiene treatments through a network of specialist dental clinics.

Health is one of the strategic axes of growth and value creation for Grupo Ageas Portugal and it also sits at the heart of the work of the Ageas Foundation ensuring a seamless and well-integrated approach to the sector. And while the strategic ambition and parameters for growth were first set out 2022, two years on we are seeing visible and tangible evidence of the impact being made.

In digital health, Médis launched Médis Active: a health & wellness app, the Marketplace: an online health & wellness store, and the Virtual Wallet: a loyalty wallet with cashbacks. These initiatives are opening up Médis to a much broader public while increasing insurance customer loyalty. And as we seek to shift the focus onto prevention and wellbeing, we are seeing the impact on claims ratios.

In physical care services, the acquisition of One Clinics has allowed Médis to expand beyond oral health clinics to a new speciality – rehab and physiotherapy available now through a network of 14 clinics.

Further launches will focus the Médis value proposition around key areas of concern voiced by our customers and the broader public: Prevention, Menopause, Nutrition, Sleep and Mental Health, among others. Thanks to these initiatives we are transforming Médis into a true health system, with relevant solutions for everyone and at the same time Portugal has become the lead reference for the Ageas Group on healthcare.
